A Tail of Temperance
So you read my last post and thought ‘you know what Lurian, you’re absolutely right, I do want a FatCat of my own’ and decided on which breed you’re going to be initiating into the family. As I know this was exactly what was going through your mind, I have compiled a little checklist for you to consider before and when you bring your little friend home.
Bringing your new FatCat home is an exciting time, but it's important to be prepared to ensure that the transition is smooth for both you and your new feline companion. Here is a checklist to help you prepare for your new cat's arrival:
1. Set up a comfortable space for your cat: Before your cat arrives, make sure to set up a cosy and comfortable space for them to call their own. This can be a separate room or a designated area in your home. This space should have all the essentials such as a litter box, food and water bowls, and a comfortable bed or sleeping area.
2. Purchase food and litter: Make sure to have a supply of food and litter on hand before your cat arrives. Ask the shelter or breeder what the cat has been eating and try to stick with the same food for the first few days, to avoid stomach upset.
3. Purchase necessary supplies: Purchase all the necessary supplies such as a litter scoop, food and water bowls, a bed or sleeping area, toys, scratching post or pad, and a carrier.
4. Get a vet check-up scheduled: Make sure to schedule a vet check-up as soon as possible after your cat arrives. This is important to ensure that your cat is healthy and to address any potential health issues early on.
5. Prepare for the cat's arrival: Make sure to remove any toxic plants or chemicals from your home, and ensure that all windows and doors are securely closed to prevent escape.
6. Give your cat time to adjust: Remember that your new cat may be nervous or scared in their new environment. Give them plenty of time to adjust to their new surroundings and don't force them to interact with you or other family members.
7. Set up an activity schedule: Establish a daily routine for your cat, including feeding, litter box cleaning and playtime. This will help your cat feel more secure and comfortable in their new home.
8. Create hiding spots: Cats feel more secure when they have a place to hide. Provide your cat with hiding spots like cardboard boxes, or cat beds where they can retreat and feel safe.
9. Provide scratching posts or pads: Scratching is a natural behaviour for cats, so make sure to provide scratching posts or pads to help your cat fulfil this need.
10. Socialise your cat: If your cat is not used to being around other people and animals, gradually introduce them to new people and pets in your home.
11. Make sure to have emergency contact information: Make sure to have the contact information of your vet and emergency animal clinic handy in case of an emergency.
12. Provide interactive toys: Provide interactive toys to keep your cat mentally and physically stimulated, such as puzzle feeders, laser pointers and wand toys.
13. Plan for your cat's safety: Make sure to take steps to keep your cat safe, such as microchipping, and keeping up to date on vaccinations.
14. Be patient: Remember that it may take a few days or even weeks for your cat to settle into their new home. Be patient and understanding as they adjust to their new surroundings.
By following this checklist and taking the time to prepare for your new buddy's arrival, you can ensure that the transition is as smooth as possible for both you and your new feline companion. It's important to remember that every FatCat is unique and will most certainly have different needs and preferences, so be prepared to adjust as necessary (and the hilarious little bastard will insist) to ensure that your new friend is comfortable and happy with their new family in their new home. I wish you all the best embarking on your new journey together.
